Program 6: "CATCH THE READING BUG" Finale!

On Wednesday, July 23rd at 2:30 PM, 26 children and 7 adults were entertained by special guest, Oklin Bloodworth. Singing, dancing, jumping, and laughing were all part of the final summer reading program at Springville Branch Library. ALL age groups were part of a wonderful, fun-filled program. The optional craft was a "Bee Your Best" beehive mobile. After snack, reading awards, perfect attendance and other accomplishments were recognized. None went home "empty-handed"!

Final Statistics:

57 individual children registered for the summer program. The total attendance was 159, including adults, with an average attendance of 27 per program.

A special "thanks" goes out to The Friends of the Springville Library and the Friends of the Tulare County Library for providing the special guests, snacks, and prizes. Thanks to volunteers, CoryAnn Snyder and Susan Cheek for helping with stories and crafts. And a special thanks goes out to the parents and Teddy Day Care workers for faithfully bringing all the "READING BUGS" to the 2008 programs over this past 6 weeks! What a blast!

Program 5: "THE SPIDER IS NOT REALLY AN INSECT"

On Wednesday, July 16th at 2:30 PM, 13 children and 3 adults learned all about spiders. Featured stories were: Eric Carle's, THE VERY BUSY SPIDER (flannel story), Doreen Cronin's, DIARY OF A SPIDER and puppet-song, I KNOW AN OLD LADY WHO SWALLOWED A FLY. Spider facts and games were given. Several children earned reading awards and none went home empty-handed. During snack, children participated in beetle races outside. Since all the beetles flipped over and came back, no one really won the race, but it was fun anyhow! Everyone made a moving spider on a web plate. We may have arachnophobia or not????

Program 6, the final program for 2008 summer reading, CATCH THE READING BUG, will be held at 2:30 PM on July 23rd and will feature children's entertainer, OKLIN BLOODWORTH.

Come sing, dance, skip and jump to songs designed for happy active children and adults alike.

Program 4: "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" - Insect Communities

On Wednesday, July 9th at 2:30 PM, 12 children and 5 adults learned all about teamwork through the lessons provided by the bee and ant communities. "Digger" the ant came alive as the children all welcomed him to the Springville Branch Library. Patricia Polacco's THE BEE TREE and flannel board story, LA HORMIGUITA, were the featured stories of the day. Group audience participation song, OVER IN THE MEADOW was enhanced by visual flannel panels of each featured meadow dweller. Reading and participation awards were given out and after snack the children enjoyed making their own "create-a-bug" refrigerator magnet. The heat outside was intense and our numbers were down, but this program was truly the most fun to present and encouraged more audience participation.

On Wednesday, July 16th, at 2:30 PM, program #5 will feature Spiders and Flies. I KNOW AN OLD WOMAN WHO SWALLOWED A FLY, Eric Carle's THE VERY BUSY SPIDER and Doreen Cronin's, DIARY OF A SPIDER will be featured stories and songs. I know you will love to meet "FLY GUY". The craft will be a moving spider on a web. Come on out to Springville Library next Wednesday and join in the fun!

Program 3: "The Good, the Bad and the Bugly!"

On Wednesday, July 02, at 2:30 PM, 27 children and 7 adults attended the 3rd program at Springville Branch Library. We celebrated our nation's birthday, and were read Eric Carle's, "The Grouchy Ladybug" and listened to THE BUG'S LIFE: LADYBUG. We elected LADYBUG as our sheriff and deputized children to "round-up" the bad bugs and put them in our local "bug jail". Reading awards and recognition were given out. After snack, everyone made "ladybug" hand puppets! This place was hoppen!

Next Wednesday, July 9th at 2:30 PM, we will continue to learn about "The Good, the Bad and the Bugly"! We will learn about insect colonies, read Patricia Polacco's, THE BEE TREE, flannel story, "La Hormiguita" and we will sing flannel-story song, "Over in the Meadow". After reading awards are given out, we will be having "frozen bug juice" as snack and making refrigerator insect magnets! Come and join in the fun!
